It all began in the summer of 1989. While driving back from a summer vacation, Neil Rubenstein’s two son’s wanted to stop in Ann Arbor, MI so that they could get official sweatshirts and football jerseys from the University of Michigan. An hour later with $250 worth of newly acquired sweatshirts, t-shirts, shorts and jerseys packed into the trunk of the car the family returned to the road to finish the drive back to suburban Chicago. While on the drive, Neil thought to himself, “If my kids want this stuff so bad that I have to drive an hour out of our way, there have got to be more kids like mine and more parents willing to do the same.” It was at that time that the idea for Campus Colors was born.

Campus Colors was started in 1990 with the premise of bringing authentic college bookstore merchandise to suburban Chicago. The idea was simple, rather than travel to your favorite college to get merchandise to support your favorite school, Campus Colors would bring the merchandise of the school to you. What started out as a small retail store free standing commercial building that resembled a fraternity house on a college campus, Campus Colors has grown into a family run chain with locations throughout the Chicagoland area.
